October 1st is National Day in China. People from all around China come to Tiananmen Square to see the raising of the national flag, mill around, and take pictures. Viewed: 152 times.

Even though the area around was packed with people, the central walkway to Tiananmen Gate was kept clear except for a single soldier on guard. Viewed: 150 times.

The sidewalk was so crowded that it was hard to move. Viewed: 142 times.

The statues on either side of the main gate of Chairman Mao's mausoleum are really epic looking, especially at night. Viewed: 138 times.

This is the statue on the right side of the entrance way. Viewed: 131 times.

The Monument to the Heroes of the People is also in the center of Tiananmen Square. Its another great structure to photograph at night. Viewed: 140 times.

In mid October me and Jessie went to the Chaoyang Theater together to see the Chinese actobat show. Viewed: 146 times.

I made reservations beforehand, in Chinese. I wasn't exactly sure what kind of seats we'd have. It turned out that we were in the 9th row, right in the center. It was a perfect place to see the show. Viewed: 175 times.

On Halloween I decided to introduce Jessie to the good old fashioned art of pumpkin carving. Mine's on the right, hers is on the left. She did great for her first time. Viewed: 143 times.

Sadly the biggest pumpkin I could find in the grocery store was about the size of a softball. But I still think t he Jack o' Lanterns turned out pretty well. Viewed: 133 times.

I didn't find any Halloween costume stores in Beijing. The people who celebrate Halloween seem to make due with things bought from normal stores. Mine was done at the last minute, but turned out pretty well. Viewed: 156 times.

At night we met some of Jessie's friends at a club called Propaganda. Its in the university area of Beijing so tons of foriegn and Chinese students pack the place on Halloween. Almost everyone was dressed up. Viewed: 154 times.

In November I decided to drag Jjessie to the Beijing zoo. I guess I'm still new enough to the city that I can do touristy stuff like that. Viewed: 151 times.

The stars of the zoo are of course the giant panda, all of whom were predictably sleeping when we saw them. Viewed: 133 times.

While the other panda's were sleeping in their spacious panda house, this one was outside and in a better position to be photographed. Viewed: 135 times.

The Beijing zoo has a really impressive collection of small furry animals, including this exotic specimen from North America. Viewed: 135 times.

The Asian Bear gerts a photo just for being awake and active. Viewed: 142 times.

What do you get when you take almost an entire pack of wolves, put them in a pretty small cage, and have a Chinese tourist throw pieces of chicken at them? Total chaos. Viewed: 135 times.

The newest part of the zoo is the Beijing Aquarium. Its really impressive. This huge tank has tubes with escalators running through it so that you can see the massive sting rays and sea turtles up close. Viewed: 159 times.
