Skiing on my Birthday - Spring 2008
Nan Shan, or South Mountain, is a ski hill about one hour drive away from Beijing. The hill itself is quite small, but it has a pretty good variety of runs, from green beginner runs to double black diamond moguls and a small freestyle park.It was quite late in the season so the weather was really nice, warm and sunny. The snow was all artificial and a bit wet, but the conditions were good enough that it was a pleasure to ski.The view from the main chair lift. The second peak of the hill is the one with the small tower on it. Its not so high up, but the only way down from there is on a really steal double black diamond mogul run.

One of the strangest things about this Nan Shan is the fact that the snow looks so out of place in the surroundings. All around you is dust, shrub and dry hills. The ski hill is the only snow anywhere around, artificially put here just where its needed. The dusty plateau that surrounds the ski hill makes for a really interesting view from the top.
